Here’s 30 minutes (in three parts continuing below this post) from a Steve Dahl and Garry Meier show on WLS-FM from October of 1981. Moving from WLUP to WLS only 8 months prior, Steve seems very comfortable in his surroundings.
This segment begins with the venerable “Oh Wally”. A shot at Wally Phillips, a long-time morning icon on WGN radio. Growing up, my mom would listen to Wally in the morning as she got the family ready to face another day. At that age, the only things I knew about radio was Wally and Cub games. It wasn’t until a few years later that I got my own radio and found there were “other worlds” in morning radio, including Steve Dahl. When Steve did “Oh Wally” I thought it was the perfect characterization of Wally and his typical listener.
It seems ironic that, at the time, Steve was the young upstart taking shots at the current Kings of the radio Hill. The irony now is that Steve is the current Grand Old Man of Chicago radio. The difference now is that we can’t really see any young up-and-comers who are able to take his place. They are all still learning from the master.
Highlights include: (10:23)
- Oh Wally
- We need to be nicer to Marcus
- Steve is running (and complaining)
Enjoy!!!
