Steve & Garry – Apr. 13, 1981 (1/3)

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Here is about 30 minutes of Steve & Garry from April 13, 1981 when they were on WLS-FM. This post is in 3 parts.

I loved it when Steve would read hate mail from listeners. One of the reasons I really watch my grammar while writing this is because Steve always had a thing for grammar. I don’t want to disappoint.

Highlights include (14:19)

  • Steve reads fan mail
  • Steve & Garry walk out. Marcus takes over.
  • Space Shuttle News, Traffic and Weather
  • Story about their old manager

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – March 16, 1982 (2/3)

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Here’s Steve & Garry from March 16, 1982 on WLS-FM. This post will be in 3 parts. This is Part 2.  Click here for Part 1.

We did a post back in January from Feb. 15, ’82 where Steve talked about the lyrics to his new song which turned out to be Crew Cut Hero. This is the song. It is about General James Lee Dozier who was kidnapped by an Italian Terrorist group in December 1981 and was held for 42 days. It is a parody of Juke Box Hero by Foreigner.

Steve & Garry – Feb 13 ‘82

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Steve & Garry workin’ on the weekend. Here is a air check from February 13, 1982 of a few minutes of S&G doing the Saturday shift on WLS-FM.

This is a tad out of order. Last week we posted a clip of WLS management calling Steve about an ad that Marcus allegedly placed in the SunTimes as kind of a matchmaking service for gay people. This clip has the original audio. If you want this in context, listen to this then go to the Feb, 15 post.

S&G also talk about bad weather and getting stuck in the snow along with some Paul Lynde stuff from Hollywood Squares.

It’s only 7 minutes so, enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – March 1981 – Part 2 of 2

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here is Part 2. This is the first air check that has the “whips”; an audio rendition of someone being whipped to climax for all you BDSM fans out there. It is interesting to note that it is a porn audio clip that was used on the air because this is way before the internet and VCR’s were not yet mass-market.

Highlights include (11:36):

  • Steve gets whipped for lying
  • Lamaze Class
  • “Here’s us” – S&G sing Hey Nineteen. They are really Steely Dan (and REO).
  • Marcus gets a raise and has created a Wacky Tape code sheet
  • 3 Stooges stuff and Steve is Curly Howard reincarnated
  • Maggie with some news

Enjoy!!

  • Polka open – It’s hard to believe…

Steve & Garry – October 1981 – Part 1 of 3

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Here’s 30 minutes (in three parts continuing below this post) from a Steve Dahl and Garry Meier show on WLS-FM from October of 1981. Moving from WLUP to WLS only 8 months prior, Steve seems very comfortable in his surroundings.

This segment begins with the venerable “Oh Wally”. A shot at Wally Phillips, a long-time morning icon on WGN radio. Growing up, my mom would listen to Wally in the morning as she got the family ready to face another day. At that age, the only things I knew about radio was Wally and Cub games. It wasn’t until a few years later that I got my own radio and found there were “other worlds” in morning radio, including Steve Dahl. When Steve did “Oh Wally” I thought it was the perfect characterization of Wally and his typical listener.

It seems ironic that, at the time, Steve was the young upstart taking shots at the current Kings of the radio Hill. The irony now is that Steve is the current Grand Old Man of Chicago radio. The difference now is that we can’t really see any young up-and-comers who are able to take his place. They are all still learning from the master.

Highlights include: (10:23)

  • Oh Wally
  • We need to be nicer to Marcus
  • Steve is running (and complaining)

Enjoy!!!
