Marcus Palmer Tribute show – Wednesday, 4/28/1982

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Marcus Palmer was big. Big in all aspects of the word. Including having a really big heart. Not only did he help Steve & Garry with the show, he became a friend to them both and was much loved by staff and regular listeners.

Marcus passed away Monday, April 26, 1982. He was just 20 years old at the time. Marcus had a cardiac arrest following routine tonsil surgery. The news was discovered during a phone call to the hospital while Steve & Garry were on the air making for a surreal and devastating experience. What starting a few days before as jokes and wise remarks about a routine procedure turned into the unthinkable.

S&G left the show after hearing the news and did not come into the studio or record The Network Show on Tuesday (4/27). This is about 70 minutes of audio from the Steve and Garry show as broadcast on WLS-FM the day they returned, Wednesday, April 28, 1982. This is about as real as radio gets.

An interesting note about this date is that 4/28/82 was Patrick Dahl’s first birthday.

Please post any Marcus memories that you may have in the Comments section.

Parts of this aircheck has been previously played on this site but the first post was a lot shorter and of questionable quality. This aircheck is twice as long.

You can hear additional airchecks with Marcus on The Stever Vault by clicking the “Marcus” tag at the bottom of this post.

Part 1 (29:40)

  • Maggie with news (in progress)
  • Steve talks about the funeral

  • Listener call addressing Another One Bites the Dust song

Steve & Garry – Monday, 4/26/1982 – The Marcus call

        Monday, April 25th, 2011

Here are Steve & Garry from Monday, April 26, 1982 as broadcast on WLS-FM. This is the show where Steve & Garry hear of the passing of their dear friend Marcus Palmer. It doesn’t get any more real than this. The first 9 minutes are S&G trying to confirm the bad news. The two left the studio shortly after that and the remaining 4 minutes of audio are snippets of the show with Brant Miller filling in. Maggie also fills in with news and is on the verge of tears as she talks about it.

Listening to this is like watching an old, familiar movie that has an unhappy ending where you wait, and wait, knowing that it is not going to end well. Every time I hear this aircheck my stress level begins to rise as each minute passes by.

The Steve Dahl Supper Club Premier- 3/21/82

        Friday, March 11th, 2011

        Supper Club_Ad

This is (somewhat of) a re-post. This is the premier broadcast of The Steve Dahl Supper Club; also referred to as The Network Show. The SDSC was broadcast on all ABC radio affiliates (that chose to run it). Taped in front of a live audience, this was broadcast on WLS-FM on Sunday evening, March 21, 1982. This is presented in two parts below. This is the entire 2-hour show. This is a brand new rip from cassette at slightly better quality than the original post.

Steve uses language that is not appropriate for the network execs and is bleeped several times. It is also good to hear them use the door sound effect as they enter.

        Part 1 (27:43)

        • The Pledge
        • What S&G look like
        • Fan mail
        • Steve on guitar
        • The Hostages

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

        Part 2 (31:42)

        • Call Iran just for nostalgia
        • Ayatollah! Live
        • Dead Hollywood Squares
        • Marcus
        • Steve is a Psychic
        • Do You Think I’m Disco Live

We did a post from the Feb. 15, ’82 show where Steve talked about the lyrics to his new song which turned out to be Crew Cut Hero. This is the song. It is about General James Lee Dozier who was kidnapped by an Italian Terrorist group in December 1981 and was held for 42 days. It is a parody of Juke Box Hero by Foreigner.
