Marcus Palmer was big. Big in all aspects of the word. Including having a really big heart. Not only did he help Steve & Garry with the show, he became a friend to them both and was much loved by staff and regular listeners.
Marcus passed away Monday, April 26, 1982. He was just 20 years old at the time. Marcus had a cardiac arrest following routine tonsil surgery. The news was discovered during a phone call to the hospital while Steve & Garry were on the air making for a surreal and devastating experience. What starting a few days before as jokes and wise remarks about a routine procedure turned into the unthinkable.
S&G left the show after hearing the news and did not come into the studio or record The Network Show on Tuesday (4/27). This is about 70 minutes of audio from the Steve and Garry show as broadcast on WLS-FM the day they returned, Wednesday, April 28, 1982. This is about as real as radio gets.
An interesting note about this date is that 4/28/82 was Patrick Dahl’s first birthday.
Please post any Marcus memories that you may have in the Comments section.
