Steve & Garry prank call Iran – WLUP-FM

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I thought I would throw this up on the site because 4th of July is just around the corner…

Things were a little different 31 years ago. We were in the middle of the Cold War with the USSR and the USA was the worlds’ most powerful country and had its hands in many places all over the world. Revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called the USA  “The Great Satan”.

The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981, after a group of Islamist students and militants took over the American Embassy in support of the Iranian Revolution. (Wikipedia)

In the USA, the hostage-taking created a huge surge of patriotism that had not been seen since early in the Vietnam war and a severe backlash against Iranians developed in the United States.

In response, Steve Dahl took to the airwaves to get the Hostages released. First, by making prank calls to Iran. Then, SD gave the phone numbers out over the air and encouraged every listener to do their duty and make a call themselves. He also made the parody song “Ayatolla“.
At first, the calls were randon numbers. Then SD got the number to Islamic Fried Chicken.

Steve Dahl and WLUP were reprimanded by the State Department and told to stop because it may escalate the situation.

I am posting three airchecks.

The first is a series of 3 calls made by Steve and Garry during that time.

Prank calls to Iran

The second is 36 minutes of a Steve & Garry Show on WLUP-FM from July 3, 1980. This show includes a call to Iran (in Part 2).

Steve & Garry, July 3, 1980 (1/2)
Highlights of this aircheck include an attempt to call to Jimmy Piersol to talk about Disco Demolition that took place one year earlier. Also, News with Buzz and a failed EBS test.

Steve & Garry, July 3, 1980 (2/2)
Highlights include the EBS test/FCC talk (Steve cheated on his FCC license test). A phone call with Janet where Garry says he had “one of those dreams” about Janet the previous night. And finally, a call to Islamic Fried Chicken in Iran.

Another call to Iran that was previously posted on this site can be heard here.

You can also listen to Steve & Garry do the 10 year anniversary of their prank calls to Iran at The Original Shock Jock site on YouTube. Here.

Have a great July 4th weekend!!!

The Steve Dahl Supper Club – 3/21/82 (Part 1)

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Supper Club_Ad

This is the premier broadcast of The Steve Dahl Supper Club. The SDSC was broadcast on all ABC radio affiliates (that chose to run it).  Taped in front of a live audience, this was broadcast on Sunday evening, March 21, 1982. This is Part one of two. Part 2 is below. This is the entire 2-hour show.

Steve uses language that is not appropriate for radio and is bleeped several times. It is also good to hear them use the door sound effect as they enter.

Highlights include: (30:52)

  • The Pledge
  • What S&G look like
  • Fan mail
  • Steve on guitar
  • The Hostages
  • Call Iran just for nostalgia

Enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – Day 2 at WLS – (5/5)

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Here is part 5 of Day 2 of Steve & Garry from WLS-FM. This show was broadcast February 24, 1981.

Highlights include (6:03):

  • Jimette the Elvis impersonator
  • More Rita Genrett tied to The Hostages
  • AC/DC out

Just a personal note here…I’m going to highlight things that I’ll call “Steverisms”. A Steverism is some small tidbit that I picked up from The Steve Dahl Show that has remained with me throughout my life.

This Steverism can be heard at the end of this episode and at the beginning of part 3. It is the little “Hua” they say at the beginning of the AC/DC song. Happily, I can report that I now have my son doing it also.

Enjoy!!!

July 1980 (2/2)

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Here is the rest of the show from July of 1980. It is Steve Dahl and Garry Meier from WLUP-FM (The Loop).

Highlights include: (9:54)

  • More Buzz baldness talk
  • News with Buzz:  Ron Regan, Mayor Byrne, city news, The Hostages (Day 297)

I think it’s cool to listen to the news from 30 years ago. It’s a good history lesson and we tend to forget the stories and the sentiment of the day. Plus, I always liked Steve’s perspective on the news.

  • Greg’s got a hickey.

(Show producer Greg Solk began his career as a high school intern for Steve at the Loop in the late ’70s)

  • Can’t get the show close right: “You’re beautiful, don’t ever change and don’t forget to PARTY! Hard.”

Enjoy!!
