Happy 31st Birthday Garry Meier – Dec 2, 1980 (part 2 of 2)

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Part 2 contains one of my most used Steverisms (A Steverism is some small saying that I picked up from The Steve Dahl Show that has remained with me throughout my life). This Steverism is the “Oops” that Steve says during the call where the guy got injured (2:46). Life is full of a lot of oops’ like that one.

Highlights include: (6:50)  [Part 1 is above]

  • You’re on the air!
  • Steve got Garry a suit bag for his birthday
  • Buzz talk
  • Show Close (cuts off)

Enjoy!!

More holiday fun to come…

Steve & Garry – Nov. 25, 1980

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Hi All,

I have been away attending to some family business. This may be my only post this month. If you are new to The Stever Vault, now is a good time to catch up on older posts. Looking ahead… December is looking pretty good with some past Christmas shows.

This air check comes from a Steve and Garry show on WLUP-FM from November 25, 1980. Steve still has the network so in the break you will hear the turkey gobble-gobble signaling the network break as opposed to the cow.

A little poorer audio quality than usual with a couple of drop-outs.

Highlights include (12:43):

  • Steve Dahl weight joke (find new newsman)
  • MGM Grand fire jokes
  • News with Buzz (Psychological update: Small breasts)
  • You’re on the air! Kukula Patrol!
  • Show Close

Enjoy!!

Breakfast Club Live – Sept. 12, 1980 – Part 1

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I remember this show because I was there! Me and a few friends caught a couple Breakfast Clubs Live and it was always a blast.  Drinking (and stuff) in the early morning while driving into the city was always part of the plan. (Sorry Mom, everyone did it back then and we didn’t know it was wrong)

This show includes Another Kid in the Crawl done live. Steve’s “Stairway” (I think he has said that about several of his songs).

This is from Friday, September 12, 1980 when Steve and Garry were on The Loop (WLUP-FM). S&G are live at the Carnegie Theatre. This air check is in two parts.

Enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – The Secret Post

Monday, September 14th, 2009

It seems that another Steve Dahl fan over on YouTube has had some copyright problems with a certain religious organization over a video that he uploaded.

So, in order to avoid any cease and desist orders that may come my way because of this post, I won’t mention the particular ministry individual or the song that Steve created so it will be harder for them to find my little blog. But being a SD fan, you are probably following my drift…

This aircheck was recorded the day after Steve, Garry, Buzz and a handful of listeners went to Indiana to witness this religious gathering. The link above has about 3 minutes from earlier in the day of that same show.

This audio post is about 14 minutes long and has pieces from two shows on it. The second part of this audio post is from the next day and has “The Song” which is a parody of the Blondie song “Call Me”. This comes from a tape marked January 1981 so it is shortly before Steve was fired from WLUP. I’m not sure of the exact date of the broadcast.

Once again, Steve cues up a song on the air spinning the vinyl backward. I love when he does that.

Enjoy!!
Shhhhhhhh! This one’s a secret.

Steve & Garry – Breakfast Club Live – Jan ’1981

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Some of Steve and Garry’s craziest shows were done live in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee. The audience was usually very self-medicated. This is a Steve Dahl Breakfast Club Live from the Oriental Theater in Milwaukee. It comes from a broadcast on WLUP in January of 1981.

This 10 minute segment  starts with Ayatollah done live (in progress). Then S&G go into the audience for a Kukula Patrol. At one point, Steve tries to control what goes out over the air and asks that a t-shirt not be read  mentioning that he “has a lot of problems”. This comes just a week or two before he was fired from WLUP. We also get a visit from Stan.

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – Traffic with Tyrone – 5/8/80

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

OK, here is a shorty (and I don’t mean the midget engineer)…just a quick but entertaining 4:35 with one of my favorite characters, Tyrone Traffic. “What it tis”.

This air check comes from Steve and Garry on WLUP-FM (The Loop) from May 8, 1980.

There is also a quick sports/weather report with Buzz. This clip ends with Steve stepping on the Red Rider lyrics. The do-over has a great rewind of vinyl on a turntable. Listen for Garry to drop-in the “John is dead” reference. The actual reference by The Beatles was that Paul McCartney was dead. John Lennon did die 7 months later.

Enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – 11/21/80 – Show Close

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Here’s another quickie…
This comes on the heels of the last post where Steve is back in the studio after being sick. It is just the last couple minutes of the show for Steve & Garry on WLUP-FM for Friday, November 21, 1980.

It is amazing how much can happen in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Highlights include:

  • Ironman
  • Steve recovering from a bout of something
  • Show Close – “You’re beautiful, don’t ever change. Don’t forget to have a good weekend and PARTY! Like a banshee. Hard. Do bongs (Marathon)”
  • Buzz quitting cigarettes

Enjoy!!

Skylab

Monday, July 20th, 2009

SkylabSo, in celebration of man landing on the moon (do you think the media could beat this story to death a little more?), we might as well do our own tribute (sort of)…

Because I don’t have any moon landing stuff, here is Steve’s parody of Skylab done to the Stones song Shattered. BTW, Skylab’s reentry was the day before Disco Demolition (7/11/79).

Enjoy!!
