Steve & Garry – WLUP-AM – September 1989

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I have a series of tapes that are pretty much unlistenable. 30 year-old tapes can do that. So instead, I’ll just put up some great filler from 1989. So here are Steve & Garry from around September 1, 1989 as broadcast on WLUP-AM. We have about 40 minutes of audio in two parts. The file is marked Best of Steve & Garry Side B so I can’t be 100% sure of the date. It may have come from more than 1 show

There are some great bits in this piece so I know you will enjoy it.

Part 1 (23:03)

  • Urination Problems
  • Greta Alexander the psychic
  • News
  • More News
  • Mother Truckers – Squinty & Lyle

Steve, Garry & Anthony – WLUP-AM

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

"Ay, I just buffed da hood!"

I don’t have a date on this aircheck but it was broadcast on WLUP-AM 1000. It contains two songs “To All the Broads I’ve Porked Before” and “Let’s Pork“. Anthony also takes some phone calls but this segment is not called “Ask Anthony”.

Steve Dahl as Anthony DiGiovanni

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

"Ay, I just buffed da hood!"

As far as characters go, Anthony DiGiovanni is probably one of the Dahl fan favorites. There are requests on the Steve Dahl forum asking Steve to do Anthony on the podcast. At this point, his appearances have been few and far between.

As promised, this week we are delivering some bonus content (while Steve & Garry are on vacation back in 1982). Here is a compilation of several airchecks featuring Anthony. The first two are “Ask Anthony” segments that aired on WLUP-AM in 1986. As you will hear in the last couple of segments, Steve seemed to be getting tired of the feature. Listeners asking the same questions over and over as well as limited listener participation.

Aircheck #3 features Anthony at Festa Italiana in 1987. This is AG at his best and being the ultimate celebration of “Italianess”, he is completely in his element.

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Happy Halloween!!! Here is Part 2 of over an hour of a Steve & Garry show broadcast on October 31, 1988 on WLUP-AM 1000. This includes the broadcast recreation of the 1898 H.G. Wells science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. The War of the Worlds radio drama was first broadcast on the CBS radio network in 1938. To begin at Part 1, scroll down or go here.

Part 3 of 4 (17:15)

The War of the Worlds (concludes)* Sorry, the end final piece is not available but Steve later mentions that they were unable to finish. So I’m not sure how much is missing.
Norman Basile Ghost Hunter is in the studio (signal fade)*

Part 4 of 4 (21:15)
Norman Basile Ghost Hunter in the studio
Phone Calls
Steve & Garry talk about the conclusion of The War of the Worlds
Show close: The Monster Mash

*The quality of audio I receive cannot always be guaranteed to be of the highest quality. This is why I wish Steve would post his own classic audio. I’m sure it is pristine. I would be happy to offer my services as The Curator of the Classics.

Steve & Garry – Oct. 31, 1988 – War of the Worlds (1/2)

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Happy Halloween!!! Just like Christmas, it seems like the decorations come out earlier and earlier each year. Well, the same holds true here as we pull out a Halloween broadcast mid-month.

When Steve & Garry moved to WLUP-AM 1000 they began doing a lot of radio theater. Mother truckers with Squinty & Lyle, The Cornbores Saga and various other radio dramas like A Christmas Carol and The War of the Worlds (Yes, we have audio of all of these).

Here is over an hour of a Steve & Garry show broadcast on October 31, 1988. This includes the broadcast recreation of the 1898 H.G. Wells science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. The War of the Worlds radio drama was first broadcast on the CBS radio network in 1938.

As with most radio dramas done by S&G, they are always a work in progress. Stops and starts. Improvements and corrections. I think that is one of the things that made these features so great.

Our cast of characters include:
Steve Dahl
Garry Maier
Cliff
Tommy Skillethead
Paul Garry
Paul Steve
Anthony

This segment will be split into two posts with two parts per post. Because this was recorded from an AM radio signal, there are tendencies toward signal fade and audio dropouts.

Part 1 of 4 (21:59)
Highlights include:
Show Open
Steve had a bad day betting on football
The War of the Worlds

Part 2 of 4 (22:14)
The War of the Worlds (continues)

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

So let’s skip ahead a few years to 1989. To acknowledge the end of the regular season of baseball where none of the Chicago teams will see the post season, here is an aircheck from October 5, 1989. We find Steve & Garry at Murphy’s Bleachers for the 1989 NLCS playoffs between the Cubs and the San Francisco Giants. This show is being broadcast between games 1 and 2 of the series that is being played in Chicago. The Cubs lost the first game the night before, 11-3. They will win this evening, 9-5. The Cubs will go on to lose the series 4-1.

This show was broadcast on WLUP-AM 1000. Steve sounds a little annoyed to be there. He never liked the Cubs.

We are presenting this series in 2 parts with two airchecks per part. Part 2 is below.

For more baseball fun, head over to Dahl.com and to to the media page to find some classic clips. One is “Steve & Garry with Harry Caray 10/12/1984 – Steve and Garry broadcasting at the Cubs/Padres playoff series. Harry Caray wanders over to the broadcast. Talk about other baseball announcers, Jimmy Piersal, Steve Stone why he left the White Sox and how he got the Cubs gig.” It is really funny!! Another clip on that page is “Steve and Garry broadcasting from Comiskey Park, Comiskey is celebrating it’s 75th birthday.”
