About This Site
I started listening to “The Stever” in late 1978 when he was on WDAI. I have been hooked ever since.
I was a member of the Insane Coho Lips Army and was one of those drunk suburban kids that skipped school to show up at the Carnegie Theater on a Friday morning for the Breakfast Club. I wish I had only listened to my buddies and agreed to go with them to Disco Demolition so many years ago.
I started making tapes of the show so I had something to listen to while driving to and from college. Radio in Central Illinois was no treat back then.
Recently, I have been digitizing my private collection of cassettes into mp3′s. I wanted to honor him with this fan blog and play these airchecks. Many of Steve’s fans have never heard the old stuff so I hope you enjoy a little history.
This site will not post anything that you can purchase at the Steve Dahl Store .
Thank you, Steve for all the great years of radio as well as the podcast.

Hi- just came across your site- it’s GREAT!
I was wondering if anyone remembers hearing (or has a copy of) an S&G show from Dec. ’82 (WLS-FM)- where Steve had been promoting a special edition of ‘Celebrity Jeopardy’ called ‘Ordinary People Jeopardy’ as a riff on the movie which had just come out. (Gary Deeb plugged Steve’s planned bit in his column the day before.)
During the first part of the show-Steve was telling listeners he was going to send Marcus down to the street @ 5pm and pick a random fan off the street to be the ‘Ordinary Person’ contestant. The big secret? Steve was never really intending for Marcus to actually do this- Steve was planning on surprising/pranking his listeners- and had privately instructed Marcus to go down to the lobby and escort the real Art Fleming up to the studio during the (marathon) commercial break. And then-surprise- the real Art Fleming would be the 3rd contestant (with ‘Art Fleming Jr.’ hosting!)
Well-when the real Art Fleming caught wind of Steve’s plan to prank the listeners, Art deviously suggested turning the joke around and pranking Steve!
Mr. Fleming asked Marcus to actually go down and really pick a fan off the street and bring the fan into the studio as the ‘Ordinary People’ contestant (while Art hid in a side room!)
Well- I was that fan! I was 16 and a huge SD fan. So when I was picked from the 15-20 hopefuls down on Wacker Dr.- I was blown away. But thankfully I’d been an avid listener since ‘DAI, so I knew the show really well and was familiar with the running jokes/references and most importantly-(as it would turn out later) knew to ‘ring in’ with my voice (as the buzzer) when I had a Jeopardy answer!
Back to the story-
After dispersing the crowd, Marcus quickly escorted me to a ground-floor elevator and hit the button for the 14th floor- when suddenly the elevator stopped at 7. The doors parted and in walked the real Art Fleming! After quick introductions, Art pulled me aside, leaned over and proceeded to whisper in my ear what my role would be in the prank I was about to take part in.
Art explained to me that after the commercial break, Marcus would bring me into the studio (without Art Fleming) and-with a straight face- Marcus would excitedly tell Steve he’d found a fan off the street- just as Steve had asked for. And, if Steve were to question me, I was to play dumb and deny ever having seen or met Art Fleming anywhere in the building.
Well- after the commercial break, Art’s prank moved ahead as planned. Marcus brought me into the booth -live on the air- and introduced me to Steve and the listeners. Immediately- Steve turned to me and said, “What have you done with Art Fleming?” I just shrugged and said I hadn’t seen Art anywhere.
After a few minutes of Steve berating Marcus for ‘blowing the surprise’, the real Art Fleming walked into the booth and everyone had a big laugh. Steve was nice enough to let me stay on as the 3rd contestant (with Art standing over my shoulder as my consulting partner!) The ‘Ordinary People Jeopardy’ game went on as promised and the segment ran almost 45 minutes. It was truly an amazing experience!
I’ve been searching for a copy of this show for nearly 30 yrs. with no luck. If there’s anyone out there who can provide/post a copy, I’d be eternally grateful. (*And as a special incentive, I’m offering up my ultra-rare shattered vinyl remnants (which I personally retrieved and stored inside the original sleeve) of an actual 12″ Disco 45 Steve smashed over his Coho Commander Army helmet in person @ the Hillside, IL ‘Anti-Disco’ rally in ’79 for the wonderful person who comes up with a copy of the “Ordinary People Jeopardy’ show!)
Thanks-
