Steve & Garry – 7/10/82 – The Meltdown

[Re-post...If you are following the chronologically posted 1982 series, this post would come next]

The Meltdown
This aircheck is from July 10, 1982. The previous day (7/9) SD had a mini-meltdown on the air. Steve did not show up for work the next day (the day of this show). In this piece, Garry is in the studio and replays the incident with commentary.

Awkward does not even come close to describing how uncomfortable this “bit” is. This is one of the most awkward radio moments I have ever experienced. Things get very (very) uncomfortable at a few points and the Steve & Garry break-up could have happened on this day.

After Garry replays the events from the day before there is a discussion, phone calls and GM continues on with the show.

There is 43 plus minutes that is presented in two parts. There are a couple of intermittent signal noise problems.

Now, to continue our chronological perspective, the next day was July 12. The third anniversary of Disco Demolition. We previously posted the 7/12/82 show here. Listen for the point about 2 minutes into the segment where Steve snaps at George (the engineer) then says “Now everybody’s thinking I’m not going to show up tomorrow”.

Enjoy!!

  1. So, whatever happened when Steve came back? Just curious as I don’t really remember. Obviously, Steve & Garry patched things up (until 93!) but I just wondered how it went down.

The Meltdown happened on a Friday. Steve did not show up the next day (Saturday). There is a post for the Monday (7/12 ) show which was the anniversary of Disco Demolition. No real mentions were made of the incident again so I have to guess it was handled off the air during that weekend and they moved on.

You know I recall Steve mentioning a time he did not come in and left Garry to do the show by himself. I think it was something about trying to teach Garry a lesson, like if Garry thinks he’s so good, let him try to do the show by himself. Must have been this incident since I don’t recall Steve not showing up for the show, either with Garry or on his own (except for those infamous suspensions at ‘LS)
