Steve & Garry – Xmas 1980

Does anyone know when Steve & Garry actually became “Steve & Garry”? At first, Garry Meier was just the overnight/news guy at The Loop and did news for Steve in the AM.

Here is a Steve & Garry show archive from just before Christmas of 1980 on WLUP. Steve still has the network and the network break sound is the jingle bells. The show is still named The Steve Dahl Breakfast Club.

Remember the whips? Steve got a porn tape of  a man being whipped to climax and started playing it on his show. (This is before the internet and VCR’s and DVD’s)

Highlights include (8:17):

  • 12 before the hour Christmas bells at the break
  • Garry with News (audio dropout)
  • Whips
  • Upbeat Christmas stories  (Steverism: “Worded wrongly”)
  • Show Close (Greg gets a scolding): “Have a good Christmas. You’re beautiful. Don’t ever change. And don’t to PARTY! Like a Banshee. Hard. Do bongs. X-mas party hard. This is the Steve Dahl Breakfast club.”

Enjoy!!

  1. Joe Destruction says:

Just as a guess I would have to say it officially became “Steve & Garry” around 83 or so, but I’m not too sure. Just from the great tapes that you have here they were even still calling it “The Steve Dahl Breakfast Club” on WLS, after being unceremoniously dumped by L. Thomas Hoyt at The Loop for ‘violating community standards’ and whatever other lame excuses station management had. (Steve’s theory was that because the station was owned by a congressman they had crossed a couple of lines, Iran pranks, drug references, counter-cultural, etc.)

Also, the whips tape was something that Buzz found and passed onto Steve. It was some kind of S&M thing, Steve even played it a little over a year ago on Jack FM and said what it was called (I’ll see if I can find it.)

Either way, another great tape, keep it up!

  2. Now that I think about it, it was probably more like 81 (still guessing!)
