Breakfast Club Live – Sept. 12, 1980 – Part 1

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I remember this show because I was there! Me and a few friends caught a couple Breakfast Clubs Live and it was always a blast.  Drinking (and stuff) in the early morning while driving into the city was always part of the plan. (Sorry Mom, everyone did it back then and we didn’t know it was wrong)

This show includes Another Kid in the Crawl done live. Steve’s “Stairway” (I think he has said that about several of his songs).

This is from Friday, September 12, 1980 when Steve and Garry were on The Loop (WLUP-FM). S&G are live at the Carnegie Theatre. This air check is in two parts.

Enjoy!!!
(Part 2 is below)

Steve & Garry – October 1981 – Part 1 of 3

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Here’s 30 minutes (in three parts continuing below this post) from a Steve Dahl and Garry Meier show on WLS-FM from October of 1981. Moving from WLUP to WLS only 8 months prior, Steve seems very comfortable in his surroundings.

This segment begins with the venerable “Oh Wally”. A shot at Wally Phillips, a long-time morning icon on WGN radio. Growing up, my mom would listen to Wally in the morning as she got the family ready to face another day. At that age, the only things I knew about radio was Wally and Cub games. It wasn’t until a few years later that I got my own radio and found there were “other worlds” in morning radio, including Steve Dahl. When Steve did “Oh Wally” I thought it was the perfect characterization of Wally and his typical listener.

It seems ironic that, at the time, Steve was the young upstart taking shots at the current Kings of the radio Hill. The irony now is that Steve is the current Grand Old Man of Chicago radio. The difference now is that we can’t really see any young up-and-comers who are able to take his place. They are all still learning from the master.

Highlights include: (10:23)

  • Oh Wally
  • We need to be nicer to Marcus
  • Steve is running (and complaining)

Enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – October 1981 – Part 2 of 3

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Here’s part 2 from a Steve Dahl and Garry Meier show on WLS-FM from October of 1981.

Highlights include (11:53)

  • Steve is still complaining
  • P-Funk with Marcus
  • Roman of Teenage Radiation has a song about the Bears

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – October 1981 – Part 3 of 3

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Here’s part 3 from a Steve Dahl and Garry Meier show on WLS-FM from October of 1981.

Highlights include (11:20):

  • Steve (complaining) wants to find a way to make money from his songs
  • Steve is very aware of people breathing
  • Garry is distant. Pulling away?
  • Augsburger Beer commercial
  • Dan Fields with traffic (Great “Diver Dan” stuff coming)

You will hear a quick promo read by Garry for WLS Rockfest. The 3-day show featured 25 groups including The Go-Go’s, The Knack, Point Blank, Survivor and several local bands at The Amphitheatre. Tickets…$3.75!! $6.00 at the door.

Enjoy!!!

Steve & Garry – The Secret Post

Monday, September 14th, 2009

It seems that another Steve Dahl fan over on YouTube has had some copyright problems with a certain religious organization over a video that he uploaded.

So, in order to avoid any cease and desist orders that may come my way because of this post, I won’t mention the particular ministry individual or the song that Steve created so it will be harder for them to find my little blog. But being a SD fan, you are probably following my drift…

This aircheck was recorded the day after Steve, Garry, Buzz and a handful of listeners went to Indiana to witness this religious gathering. The link above has about 3 minutes from earlier in the day of that same show.

This audio post is about 14 minutes long and has pieces from two shows on it. The second part of this audio post is from the next day and has “The Song” which is a parody of the Blondie song “Call Me”. This comes from a tape marked January 1981 so it is shortly before Steve was fired from WLUP. I’m not sure of the exact date of the broadcast.

Once again, Steve cues up a song on the air spinning the vinyl backward. I love when he does that.

Enjoy!!
Shhhhhhhh! This one’s a secret.

Welcome back Steve!!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Steve Dahl is back on the air internet. The new podcast is up and available at http://www.dahl.com/podcasts/podcast/2009-09-08/index.asp from the Podcast Bunker in Steve’s basement.

The first show is good (as any Stever junkie would expect). Definitely not as good as his First day on WLS. It may take a few shows to get into a groove but we are glad to hear his voice again.

We’ll have to see how this evolves as Steve works great live and this must be very new for him. I would expect interviews. Taking phone calls would be difficult as listeners would not know when or what to call about. Twitter and Facebook would take care of some of that. How about the old random “kukula patrol”?

All the best, Steve.

Steve & Garry – Breakfast Club Live – Jan ‘1981

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Some of Steve and Garry’s craziest shows were done live in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee. The audience was usually very self-medicated. This is a Steve Dahl Breakfast Club Live from the Oriental Theater in Milwaukee. It comes from a broadcast on WLUP in January of 1981.

This 10 minute segment  starts with I-A-Tola done live (in progress). Then S&G go into the audience for a Kukula Patrol. At one point, Steve tries to control what goes out over the air and asks that a t-shirt not be read  mentioning that he “has a lot of problems”. This comes just a week or two before he was fired from WLUP. We also get a visit from Stan.

Enjoy!!
