Steve & Garry – First Day on WLS (Part 2 of 2)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

So here’s part 2…  The date of this show is February 23, 1981. It won’t take long for S&G to get comfortable in their new surroundings. Things are different, though, like union engineers (who have to hit the snare drum) and a much tighter format. However, as we’ll see, S&G will change things to suit their needs and the battles with Management will begin.

Highlights include (10:29):

  • Friday Night TV
  • First Kukula Patrol
  • Still Nervous
  • Polka Music
  • Midway Airport
  • “It’s Hard to Believe”

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – First day on WLS (Part 1 of 2)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I still have several hours of audio for the WLUP days but I have been getting requests for airchecks from WLS. So, I figured that there is no better way to start this than with the first show from Steve & Garry on WLS.

In February of 1981, WLUP fired The Stever, citing “continued assaults on community standards.” Ironically, Garry was offered a position to stay at WLUP along with free parking for his Winnebago. :-)

So here is twenty minutes from Day 1 (in two parts). Steve & Garry move to afternoons (2:30 to 7pm) on WLS-FM and begin a very tumultuous relationship with WLS management and corporate radio. Tune in as Steve & Garry “Roll with the Changes” and “Take It to the Limit” one more time…

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – 11/21/80 – Show Close

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Here’s another quickie…
This comes on the heels of the last post where Steve is back in the studio after being sick. It is just the last couple minutes of the show for Steve & Garry on WLUP-FM for Friday, November 21, 1980.

It is amazing how much can happen in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Highlights include:

  • Ironman
  • Steve recovering from a bout of something
  • Show Close – “You’re beautiful, don’t ever change. Don’t forget to have a good weekend and PARTY! Like a banshee. Hard. Do bongs (Marathon)”
  • Buzz quitting cigarettes

Enjoy!!

Skylab

Monday, July 20th, 2009

SkylabSo, in celebration of man landing on the moon (do you think the media could beat this story to death a little more?), we might as well do our own tribute (sort of)…

Because I don’t have any moon landing stuff, here is Steve’s parody of Skylab done to the Stones song Shattered. BTW, Skylab’s reentry was the day before Disco Demolition (7/11/79).

Steve & Garry – November 1980 (Part 2 of 2)

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Here’s part 2…
Sorry for the late post. I’ll try to get separate posts that are in parts up a little closer together.

Highlights include (17:51):

  • Mr. Rogers acid flashback
  • Steve is sick. Greg is in the hospital.
  • Show Close – “Thank you for listening. You’re beautiful, don’t ever change and don’t forget to PARTY! Hard. Do bongs.”

At this point the Steve & Garry machine is really getting rolling. Disco Demolition has placed Steve in the national spotlight and TV deals and a radio network are in the works.

The radio show is now in syndication with stations in Milwaukee and Detroit. This leads to the cow noise. When the network started, S&G needed a way to signal affiliates that a break was coming. Hence, the use of odd sound effects (which change seasonally). You will no longer hear the exact time, only “It’s XX minutes after the hour. This is the Steve Dahl Breakfast Club”.

Enjoy!!

Steve & Garry – November 1980 (Part 1 of 2)

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Here is about 35 minutes of Steve and Garry from November of 1980 on WLUP-FM (The Loop). I’m not sure of the exact date but it is after the election. The one where Regan beat Carter.

Highlights include (16:54):

  • Wacky Stories
  • News with Buzz (City news, Election results: Steve gets a vote)
  • Kukula patrol!!

Enjoy!!

Happy 30th Anniversary Steve!! Disco Demolition

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Happy Anniversary Steve!!!

It has been 30 years since Disco Demolition and it’s been a great ride. I didn’t go to DD on July 12, 1979. My two buddies went and have some great stories to tell.

I stayed home and watched it on TV. I remember sitting in the cool basement on a warm summer night. I was watching with my girlfriend. When things went totally ape-shit, I recall sitting there thinking, “Oh boy is this great!!” My girlfriend, on the other hand, was not that impressed. Probably my first clue that this relationship was doomed.

I found one piece of audio from July 12, 1982 where Steve reads from a Sun-Times article by Bill Gleason and others that were published after DD. This piece gets off to a bad start as Steve has an argument with George the engineer. This comes two days after Steve had a big meltdown on the air and didn’t show up for the start of the show the next day. More on this later. :-)

Steve & Garry – Aug 28, 1980 (1/2)

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Here is about 20 minutes (in two parts) of a Steve & Garry show from August 28, 1981 on WLUP-FM.

Highlights include: (11:19)

  • Talk about the song Turning Japanese by The Vapors
  • Steve reads from the magazine Gay Life

One thing I loved about the Steve & Garry show was the snare drum. It started as kind of a joke, lampooning bad stage acts and other radio shows. Quite often, you can hear Garry pick up the drum sticks to hit the snare and you know something good is coming. Just one of those little things that made this show great.

Enjoy!!
